Gynaecomastia
Gynaecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue, often known as ‘man boobs’. Male breast reduction surgery and/or liposuction remove excess breast tissue to give you a firmer and more masculine chest that can also increase self-confidence.
What is gynaecomastia?
Gynaecomastia is an enlarged breast condition, that is most common in teenage boys and older men, but can affect men at any age.
Changes in your sex hormone levels due to puberty, older age or being overweight, can cause a hormone imbalance that results in breast tissue growth. Medications, drugs, alcohol and other health conditions can more rarely cause gynaecomastia.
What does a gynaecomastia surgery involve?
Gynaecomastia surgery is performed to remove the excess glandular and/or fatty tissue of an enlarged male breast.
The two treatment options for gynaecomastia are liposuction and breast reduction surgery. Your chosen surgery will depend on the type of excess tissue you have. They can be carried out alone or together.
Typically, these day case procedures are performed under general anaesthetic. Your surgeon will make a cut around your nipple.
Patients with excess breast fat will have liposuction. Your surgeon will insert a thin tube through the incision. They will loosen and remove the excess fat using a high-power vacuum.
Patients with excess breast gland tissue will have male breast reduction surgery to cut the excess gland tissue out.
If a lot of tissue needs to be removed your nipples may need repositioning.
Bandages will be placed around your breast for support and to control swelling.
What are the benefits of a gynaecomastia surgery?
The benefits of gynaecomastia surgery include:
- The creation of a firmer, flatter and more masculine chest appearance.
- Increased self-esteem and confidence.
- The ability to wear fitted tops and show your chest.
