Rhinoplasty or nose-reshaping is a cosmetic surgery for men and women to address common concerns about the nose and to bring it into balance with the rest of the face.
It may be that you feel your nose is disproportional in size to your other facial features or that the shape is disagreeable. A rhinoplasty can adapt the features of your nose to create a size and shape that you are happy with, and it can lead to improvements in self-confidence and breathing.
What is a rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also called a ‘nose job’, is cosmetic surgery to change the shape and size of your nose.
A rhinoplasty is carried out if you are unhappy with the way your nose looks, to restore its shape after an injury or, to relieve breathing problems.
What does a rhinoplasty involve?
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic and can take between one to three hours depending on what you are having done.
A rhinoplasty is carried out by either making tiny cuts inside your nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or making one cut across the skin between your nostrils (open rhinoplasty). The type of rhinoplasty will depend on the treatment area of your nose. Your nose surgeon will discuss this in detail with you during your consultation.
Rhinoplasty surgery can alter the overall size of your nose or refine areas of your nose to create a more pleasing appearance. You may have changes to the:
- hump at your nose bridge
- shape of your nose tip
- length of your nose
- width of your nose
- structure and position of your nose, after injury
- ·nasal airways opening them up to improve breathing.
Your cosmetic surgeon may remove or rearrange some of the bone and cartilage in your nose hump or tip to change the shape and size of your nose or they may use extra bone or cartilage, called a graft, to build up your nose in these areas for a nose augmentation. They may also need to break your nose to reposition bone pieces closer together in a nose reduction. Your septum can be altered as part of your rhinoplasty. The skin on your nose will adjust to its new shape.
Cuts inside your nose will usually be closed using dissolving stitches. Stitches outside your nose may need to be removed a week after your operation.
What are the benefits of a rhinoplasty?
The benefits of a rhinoplasty are that it:
- Improves the appearance of your nose
- Corrects asymmetrical features
- Improves self-image and confidence
- Alleviates breathing difficulties, sinus problems and snoring
- Fixes a broken nose.

Rhinoplasty recovery and aftercare
After your rhinoplasty surgery you will stay in hospital for one to two nights.
Your nose may feel a bit tight and you may have some pain especially around your nose tip. Over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen will help control this.
To help reset your nose in its correct position you will have a protective splint over your nose for seven to ten days. When the splint is removed you will be able to see the changes to your nose.
You will have bruising and swelling but this will fade after two weeks.
You may feel bunged up for the first few weeks and you may have to breathe through your mouth. A nasal spray or drops can help.
Your smell may be affected initially. This should settle after a few weeks.
You can return to work after two weeks.
Your nasal bone will take three months to heal so you will need to be extra careful during this time not to injure it.
