Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Your skin loses its elasticity as you age and gravity pulls this loose skin down so that it collects as folds in your upper eyelids and deep creases in your lower eyelids. The muscles beneath your eye skin also slacken over time and fat can bulge forward making your eyes look baggy.
Blepharoplasty is a common cosmetic surgery for men and women that reshapes your eyelids to reverse the signs of ageing and tired looking eyes. It enhances the appearance of your eyelids and also improves your vision where eyelids obstruct it.
What is an eyelid surgery?
Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure for your eyelids to create a more youthful look.
Your upper and lower lids can be operated on together or separately. Upper eyelid surgery aims to improve your vision, smooth sagging or loose skin on your upper eyelids, and make you look younger. Lower eyelid surgery helps to remove wrinkles, address drooping lower eyelids and reduce puffiness.
What does an eyelid surgery involve?
Eyelid surgery takes up to two hours to perform depending on the exact procedure you are having. It can be carried out under local anaesthetic as a day case procedure or under general anaesthetic which typically requires an overnight stay. Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic.
Your cosmetic surgeon will make cuts that follow the natural lines of your eyelids. For upper eyelid surgery this will be in the creases of your upper lids and for lower eyelids surgery this is just below your lower lid lashes. These cuts will be extended into your crow’s feet at the corner of the eyes.
Through these cuts, your surgeon will remove sagging muscle, extra fat, and excess skin around your eyes.
The cuts are then stitched up with very fine sutures.
What are the benefits of an eyelid surgery?
The benefits of an eyelid surgery include:
- Enhanced, fresher and younger looking eyes
- The correction of premature ageing of your eye
- Improved vision if impaired by obstructing eyelids
- Increased self-confidence
- Easier make-up application.

Eyelid surgery recovery and aftercare
Depending on your procedure, you may go home the same day or stay in hospital overnight. If you go home you should not drive for at least 24 hours and you should have an adult stay with you overnight.
You may need painkillers to keep you comfortable.
Your eyelids may bleed a little for a day or two after the operation. This can be dabbed away gently. You should avoid activities that increase blood flow to your face such as straining, bending and lifting for several weeks.
You may have watery eyes for a few weeks after your eyelid surgery due to swelling under the conjunctiva and swollen tear ducts not draining properly. Eyedrops may help or you can gently clean your eyes with wet gauze.
Your eyelids may look and feel tight when closed. This is due to swelling and skin removal. It will ease as the swelling goes down.
You should sleep with extra pillows to facilitate keeping your head raised and to help reduce swelling.
Your stitches will be removed after three to five days.
You can do light activities after one or two weeks. You can then build your activity levels up.
You should not drive until you feel comfortable and safe to do so.
You can return to work after two weeks.
The swelling around your eyes can take a few weeks to settle, and you may wait longer for the final result of your eyelid surgery to appear.
