Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Sometimes after substantial weight loss or pregnancy, stretched abdominal skin does not contract back as you would like, and this may leave you with hanging skin around your stomach that you feel self-conscious about. You may also have stretch marks or abdominal scarring.
A tummy tuck can address these lower abdomen issues to create a shapelier and aesthetically pleasing appearance that can greatly improve your confidence.
What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, removes excess skin, unwanted scars, stretch marks, and fat from your lower abdomen, and tightens your stomach muscles and remaining skin.
It is most suited to men and women who have extra loose skin around their abdominal area, after losing significant excess weight or post-pregnancy for women.
A tummy tuck aims to restore a more youthful and toned stomach. It is not a procedure to lose weight.
What does a tummy tuck involve?
Your tummy tuck will be performed under general anaesthetic and will typically take up to three hours.
There are a number of variations of the abdominoplasty procedure and your surgeon will discuss the best option for your individual needs based on how much skin and fat you have to be removed.
A full abdominoplasty is for patients who have significant excess skin and fat, and muscle separation.
A mini abdominoplasty is a lesser abdominoplasty procedure for patients with a small amount of excess abdominal skin and fat below their belly button.
The procedure involves making a curved cut along the base of your abdomen from hip to hip. Excess skin and fat are removed, your abdominal muscles are tightened, and the remaining skin is pulled back into place. In a full abdominoplasty your surgeon will make another cut around your belly button to reposition it. The cuts are then closed with stitches.
Liposuction may be performed at the same time as your abdominoplasty to achieve an aesthetically balanced shape.
