Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery that helps reshape your body by removing fat that is difficult to shift through diet or exercise alone. It is most often performed on your stomach, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, and chin
Liposuction, also called ‘lipo’, liposculpture, or fat removal surgery, takes away stubborn unwanted fat from your body by sucking it out through a tube. It aims to give you a better shape and definition in problem areas.
The most targeted problem areas where fatty deposits are difficult to shift include buttocks, hips, thighs, stomach, knees, neck, upper arms, and male breast.
It is not a weight loss tool or a substitute for losing weight. It is most effective on people who are normal weight and performed in areas where the skin is firm and elastic.
What does a liposuction involve?
Liposuction is a one to two-hour day case procedure carried out under local or general anaesthetic. The length of the procedure will depend on the amount of fat that you would like removed and which area is being treated.
A small incision will be made to the treatment area. A thin plastic tube, called a cannula, will be inserted through this incision and will loosen the fat. The other end of the cannula is attached to a high-pressure vacuum that will powerfully remove fat deposits quickly and efficiently from beneath your skin.
There are a number of different techniques that your surgeon might use for liposuction. They may use a wet technique where solutions are injected into the treatment area or a dry technique without these. They may use ultrasound assisted lipectomy where ultrasound waves are used to help disrupt your fat cells and make them easier to remove.
Your surgeon can treat multiple areas during the same visit.
Once all the required fat is removed, the incision will be stitched using dissolvable sutures and bandaged.

What happens after a liposuction?
Depending on the amount of fat removed, you will either go home on the day of your liposuction or stay overnight in hospital.
Tight bandages or compression garments will be placed on your treated area to help reduce swelling and encourage your body to adapt to its new shape. Your surgeon will let you know how long you should wear these.
The treated body areas will be bruised. This will fade with time.
You should be able to return to work within a few days if you have had only a small amount of fat removed. You may need up to two weeks for more substantial liposuction treatment.
It’s typically recommended that you return to normal exercise three to four weeks after your lipo procedure, and avoid strenuous activity for ten to 12 weeks.
You will be able to drive once you feel comfortable wearing a seat belt.
After six to 12 months you will be able to see the final result of your liposuction when all the swelling has gone.
