Labiaplasty is a procedure to reshape, reduce the size of, or improve the symmetry of your labia minora (small inner lips of your vulva), or less commonly, your labia majora (large outer lips of your vulva).
What is a labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is plastic surgery performed to change the size, shape or symmetry of your labia for medical or cosmetic reasons.
You may choose to have a labiaplasty for various reasons. You might experience physical discomfort due to enlarged or distorted labia that catch on clothing, feel uncomfortable when exercising, or make having sex painful. Modern trends have moved towards a lack of pubic hair that makes labia more noticeable and you might feel self-conscious about the appearance of your labia and this may also affect your sexual intimacy. After childbirth or as you age, your labia may change shape, become larger, or lose tone, and a labiaplasty may help you regain confidence in your body.
A labiaplasty allows you to assuredly wear tight fitting clothes, and enjoy activities such as riding a bicycle or horse or having sex, without discomfort or self-consciousness.
What does a labiaplasty involve?
A labiaplasty typically takes one to two hours and is carried out under general anaesthetic or a local anaesthetic.
Your surgeon will carefully reduce and/or reshape your labia to give a neater appearance. There are several techniques and your surgeon will discuss the technique most suitable for you at your consultation. They include trimming the edges or removing a section of each labium.
After the procedure, your wounds will be stitched up with fine dissolvable stitches.
How long does a labiaplasty take to heal?
Your surgeon will advise you about how long it will take for your labiaplasty to heal and your individual aftercare plan. As a guide, you can expect to heal fairly quickly.
After your labiaplasty you will be encouraged to be up and about straight away. Labiaplasty is usually carried out as day-case surgery so you can expect to go home on the same day of your procedure, regardless of the type of anaesthetic used.
You will probably experience slight pain or discomfort and swelling. Most swelling usually settles within the first few weeks and over the counter pain medication can be taken to relieve this if required.
You should plan to take a week off work to recover, and to gradually return to normal activities after two to three weeks.
We advise you to avoid any vigorous activity for four to six weeks.
We will arrange a follow up appointment for you to check that you are recovering well.
Does a labiaplasty affect sensitivity?
This is a very sensitive area with lotsb of nerve endings. Typically, a labiaplasty does not result in diminished sensitivity but it is a possible complication if nerve damage occurs during the procedure.
What is the cost of a labiaplasty?
The cost of your labiaplasty procedure will depend on the exact labiaplasty surgery you have. This will be discussed between you and your surgeon during your consultation. You will then be advised of the guide package price which includes any outpatient care for 60 days post discharge plus one follow up consultation.
